![]() ![]() Less than 200 Swifts were built from an original production order of 497. The aircraft’s reputation was tarnished but so too was the RAF and Britain’s aircraft industry. At the same time as the Swift was suffering its various issues, with the accidents caused by a lot of instability, the Hunter was undergoing a much less troubled development despite having its own problems. The aircraft apparently failed its final evaluation by the RAF Central Fighter Establishment in February 1955, and in that same year it had become something of a national scandal. These variants proved to be superior in performance over the F 1 and F 2, but the writing was already on the wall for the Swift. Tragedy would strike the Swift early on in its service life, with a spate of accidents affecting the F 1 and F 2 with one such proving fatal. The F 2 version of the Swift would enter service that month too, however, aviation author Derek Wood referred to the Swift’s introduction as “panicked” and that it would soon become a dismal failure. THE LAST WOOD FIGHTER FREEThe Swift would finally enter RAF service in February 1954, first serving with No.56 Squadron and becoming the first RAF swept-wing aircraft to enter service with the air arm. Hubert Germain, who was the last surviving Resistance fighter honoured by late Free France leader Charles de Gaulle, died aged 101 in October. ![]()
